A Better Way to Compare Wireless Slip Rings Than Headline Data Rate

A maximum data rate is useful but incomplete

DECO's CWP2026 release states that its DKT10XX mmWave transceiver series supports up to 5 Gbps and several industrial interfaces. The announcement also describes separate wireless-power modules. This demonstrates how suppliers are making contactless rotary interconnects more concrete. It does not establish the sustained throughput, latency, gap or field adoption of every implementation.

A fair comparison starts by separating chip capability, module capability and system performance. 'Up to' may describe a laboratory maximum, an interface ceiling or an application-specific configuration. Ask what traffic pattern, distance, alignment, speed and error criterion were used.

The RF layer sets the physical channel

For a 50-ohm single-channel link, useful evidence includes operating frequency range, insertion loss, return loss or VSWR, amplitude variation during rotation and sensitivity to gap and alignment. Broadband and low-loss claims need numeric curves and reference planes. Without them, two products may use the same words for very different performance envelopes.

Insertion loss and VSWR answer different questions

Insertion loss describes how much signal is lost through the rotary path. VSWR or return loss describes impedance matching and reflected energy. Both should be plotted across frequency and under rotation. A good static trace does not prove stable performance at 6000 rpm or under vibration.

The digital layer needs its own evidence

Digital evaluation should include sustained payload throughput, bit or packet error rate, latency, jitter, protocol behavior and link recovery. A transparent physical link may still interact with encoding, clock recovery and protocol timing. EtherCAT control, uncompressed video and buffered sensor data may have similar headline rates but different acceptance criteria.

Ask whether the stated data rate is one direction or aggregate, whether traffic is continuous or burst-based and how the link behaves near its tolerance limits. These answers matter more than a single maximum number.

Mechanical tolerance is part of communication performance

A contactless rotary link operates through a controlled spatial relationship. Define nominal gap, minimum and maximum gap, radial offset, angular tilt, axial movement, runout and vibration. Test them in combinations that reflect the machine. At high speed, thermal growth and balance can change the relationship during operation.

Do not merge data and power claims

Contactless power may be integrated, supplied by a separate module or omitted. DECO published 12-48 V input, 5 V/3 A output and a standard 20 W rating for its associated power module, with higher customized levels. These are DECO figures. The current JINPAT engineering brief does not publish a wireless-power specification, so JINPAT articles must treat power as a separate customer requirement.

Use an evidence matrix for supplier comparison

Create rows for RF range, insertion loss, VSWR, speed, gap, misalignment, throughput, latency, error rate, interfaces, power path, environment, dimensions and validation status. For each supplier, record the exact document, test condition and configuration. Mark unsupported items as pending rather than filling them with assumptions.

JINPAT's publishable engineering position

JINPAT can discuss a single-channel 50-ohm contactless rotary transmission direction with broadband, low-loss, low-VSWR and stable high-speed design goals, including an engineering reference speed up to 6000 rpm. It should not publish a data rate, latency, gap or wireless-power value until approved tests define them.

This position is credible because it tells customers exactly which engineering data are available and which need application-specific confirmation. It also avoids copying a competitor product appearance or suggesting patent clearance without a formal review.
